NATIONAL BULLYING PREVENTION AWARENESS WEEK

"It takes a community to prevent bullying of children. The Fourth Annual National Bullying Prevention Awareness Week, October 4-10, 2009 encourages communities nationwide to work together to increase

awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children."
The PEAL Center is one of 2009 Partners—Supporting and Promoting—National Bullying Prevention Awareness Week. Groups and schools are invited to partner with the PACER Center and share their bullying

prevention activities. Partnering organizations will be listed as a link on the PACER bullying prevention Web site.
PACER has designed free web sites, downloadable activities and helpful information for teachers, administrators, parents and community organization to engage and educate children about bullying

prevention in grades K- 5.
The newest site for teens includes resources designed for teens, teachers, administrators, and parents and other professionals to engage, empower and educate students, schools and communities about

bullying prevention for middle and high school students.

Electronic Medical Healthcare Notebook Workshops: Family to Family Healthcare Information Center at the PEAL will offer workshops for parents of Children with Special Health Care Needs to learn how to

build an electronic healthcare notebook.  The workshop is free to all participants and PEAL will provide a 1 GIG Flash Drive to electronically store your notebook work. The Care Notebook is an organizing tool

for families and will help you keep track of important information. The workshops will be offered in five locations in Pittsburgh.

Kinship Support and Education Program

The Thornburgh Family Lecture Series in Disability Law and Policy is sponsored by the Thornburgh Forum for Law and Public Policy. The series was created through the generosity of Dick and Ginny Thornburgh. As 2003 recipients of theHenry B. Betts Award, the Thornburghs donated the proceeds from the award to the University of Pittsburgh to establish this lecture series. The fund has been supplemented by grants from the Office of the Chancellor, School ofHealth and Rehabilitation Sciences, and School of Law.  This course has been approved by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board for one and one-half (1.5) hours of substantive credit. Competence and Confidence:Partners in Policymaking
Early Intervention 2009-2010 -- A free leadership development training for families with children in Early Intervention and pre-school programs.  Participants will: Identify best practice supports in early intervention,  Connect with community resources, and,  Navigate the Pennsylvania Early Intervention System.  You will receive travel and childcare cost reimbursements  (if eligibility requirements are met).  Who should apply?  Interested family members from Pennsylvania who:  Have an infant, toddler or pre-school age child who receives early intervention services, Desire to learn to advocate for themselves and others by building leadership skills, Are willing to make a time commitment to attend all trainings.  All 4 trainings are 2-day sessions. All C2P2 EI 2009-2010 training sessions will be held on Fridays and Saturdays (starting in October 2009 and ending in April 2010) in Lancaster, PA. Using Section 504 to Help Children with Disabilities in School
October 28, 2009 from 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM  A telephone conference and Webinar training on Section 504, a federal civil rights law that can help children with disabilities get the accommodations, supports, and services they need in school, even if they do not qualify for special education. Kelly Darr, Staff Attorney with the Disability Rights Network of PA, and Jenny Lowman, Director of Client Services & Training with the Education Law Center-PA, will lead the training.  The training will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at 20 locations throughout Pennsylvania.
